The Sixth Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK ® Charles L Fontenay eBook Charles L Fontenay
The Sixth Megapack I have read and reviewed on my journey to rediscover science fiction of my youth, about a half a century ago. A basic guideline for me has been the issue of historic relativity which demands, in order to be fair to the authors, we must remember the cultural norms that were characteristic of the mid-twentieth century and resist a review based on seeing through the lense of our current societal standards. That being said, Fontenay stretches my ability to abide by that guideline. Fully half of the stories in this anthology contain female characters who are "headstrong" and by the end have been "tamed" or otherwise subdued or shamed. In one particular story the author does make an attempt to place the female character at the hands of an anti-hero and redeems his primary character by having him rescue the hapless woman. She is thus "freed" to be equal to the real hero. Three of his eight Megapack stories have merit (thus, three stars). "Disqualified" would qualify for a great script for the Twilight Zone, "Atomic Drive" will have you hanging on to your space-seats, and Martian Shore will delight you with "Canal Sage" and "Canal Cactus", both of which I hope really exist on Mars. Worth the price (99 cents) if for only those three.

The Sixth Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK ® Charles L Fontenay eBook Charles L Fontenay Reviews
Enjoyed it. A nice mix of stories.
Dragged a bit at times but all-in-all a good read.
Love her writing, transcends genre and time
AWESOME
all of these mega books are good.
great!
These 50s-era stories are well written and entertaining. Several are about Mars, and though not directly connected, share a common basis There are Earth colonies on Mars - domed cities as well as private homes and farms out in the desert, one must wear a "marsuit" when not under a dome, travel is by surface car or helicopter, a heat gun is the weapon of choice, and most importantly, life on Mars is dependent on support from Earth - largely through Marscorp, a company that wants to control all commerce between Earth and Mars. The Mars stories all concern someone who either directly or indirectly threatens Marscorp's monopoly. Good reading, recommended.
