A History of the World provides the reader with an overview of history from a scientific perspective, beginning with humankind's first experiences and ending with the events of 1945, with some commentary on the current state of the world. A distillation of the primary work of others, the book provides the reader with a larger view of history and offers general conclusions based on current scholarly research. Of special focus are belief systems, mythology, and human psychology, as well as the relationships between languages and their classification.
A History of the World Donn H Crilly 9780984310135 Books
This hefty book is a culmination of a lifetime of the study of history. It started with the author's love of charts, time lines, and maps as a child in Nebraska . And it continues with his subsequent 60+ overseas trips to archeological sites, museums, and libraries. Dr. Crilly completed a fellowship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic, after which he accepted a position at an Austrian medical center, followed by 33 years as a vascular surgeon in the San Francisco Bay Area. Personal travel plus massive amounts of secondary research plus the poring over of previously written noted histories make this book a seamless account of the beginnings to 1945. What makes this book different from other offerings is that the author comes from a background in science. As a retired librarian, I appreciated his emphasis on events rather than persons, and that this history incorporates a world emphasis, not just a European one.Chapters cover Early civilizations, Classic Age civilizations, Middle Centuries, Late Middle Ages, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, Europe's revolution and the 19th century. It has an extensive bibliography and index. For my eyes the font was a bit small. But to have enlarged the font on this massive 1000+ page book would necessitated expansion into a second volume. It's much more satisfying to the reader to hold the whole world in your hands.

A History of the World Donn H Crilly 9780984310135 Books Reviews
Review of "A History of the World"
"A History of the World" written by Donn Crilly is very comprehensive. The author's lifetime study of history reveals itself in the text by encompassing the part of the human psyche that each of us invariable refers to as what we "believe." Integrating religious belief systems with the glue of important events completes and holds many aspects of human history together--a history quilt of sorts with each block defining a particular perspective, yet creating a completed blanket of the world.
The book shares a regional perspective that taps into the "collective subconscious," reflecting peoples' patterns on a whole rather than relying on individuals who have taken famous leads over time. This regional approach over individualistic insight provides the reader a much broader and deeper perspective on many aspects of the world's history.
Dr. Crilly's 'A History of the World' is an excellent review of world history through the second World War. As a well-read and well-traveled surgeon and amateur historian, he writes in a manner that is intelligent and very readable. Having been in the Peace Corps, I particularly appreciate the breadth of the book and its focus on world cultures. He was very even-handed in his approach with his inclusion of not only Western cultures and history, but also Eastern (China, India, etc) and African cultures and history. As an epidemiologist, I really enjoyed his treatment of science in history. Though he does not focus on the evolution of science, he interweaves it with the stories of development and evolution of particular cultures.
The only negative is that the print is quite small but any larger and a second volume would have been needed. That aside, it is a beautiful book and very well written. I look forward to future works by Dr. Crilly. Perhaps for his next work, he could take on the history of medicine or surgery?!
